Product 6
Neil Ryding, Bob Hall and Julia Mansfield
With a strong research background in both a major oil company and a couple of large chemical concerns, Bob Hall founded Fuel Additive Science Technologies (FAST) in July 2005
Having the original intention of developing technically superior off the shelf automotive products offering 90% technology and 10% marketing (rather then the other way round); with a small marketing budget and the need to buy shelf space in key outlets, the concept was proving difficult.
However, that autumn, Bob was approached by Mark Haselden, then with CPL Petroleum, about the development of a premium heating oil with added fragrance. Also expressing interest in premium kerosene were James Spencer, then at Bayfords, which went on to launch the new product at nine depots over 7 working days, and Neil Donald, then owner of Southern Counties.
Up to this point, being a diesel and a gasoline man, Bob had never looked at kerosene. Research found much useful evidence in the bigger heating markets of France, Germany, the north east USA and Scandinavia which led to FAST’s premium product for pressure jet boilers. Then as problems with AGAs proliferated, the timing was perfect to develop a product for this market too.
Whilst the chemistry was relatively straightforward, finding a company to produce bottles in the desired quantities was a challenge. A Norwich-based company now produces 200, 100 and 50ml bottles for which FAST owns the tooling.Staff additions
Although by 2008 FAST had found its niche, it was still very much a cottage industry with a staff of two consisting of Bob and his partner,, SallyAnn as company secretary. Bob did all the formulations, bottling and labeling, even going out in a van to make sales.
Enter Charles Southan. Despite a background in selling women’s underwear, Charles proved to be a first class relationship builder; Bob credits him with being largely instrumental in growing the business across the UK. Charles’ arrival coincided with the need to desulphurise fuel which put huge demands on refineries, resulting in more kerosene being imported with inherent quality issues.
In October 2009, Charles was joined by Tim Carlon. Both recruits had come via the Golden Ball in Ironbridge, a popular watering hole of Bob’s. Sales to agricultural and marine markets are covered by Jane Murdock. By April 2010, FAST had 8 employees and when managing director Neil Ryding arrived that July, Bob took up the position of chairman. Working with Shropshire County Council, FAST now offers work placements to young people, some of whom are now in full time positions. In December 2011, chemist Julia Mansfield joined the team. The right product at the right time
Again in 2011, FAST developed the right product at the right time when the gas oil standard changed and off-road diesel saw a massive reduction in sulphur. With off road vehicles calibrated on white diesel, an additive was needed to bring red diesel up to the DERV specification.
FAST’s number one product is still its kerosene additive, now used by over 90% of the fuel distributor market. Its gas oil additive is in second place, followed by Diesel Supreme, a premium additive used by hauliers. Power Restorer, a service tool for agricultural/diesel servicing workshops, which cleans out deposits in the injectors, comes next. Recent cold winters have seen sales of anti-waxing products rise considerably whilst poor housekeeping exposure led to a peak in anti-bug sales in 2011.
To test the performance of its additives, there are two boilers and an AGA which also keeps FAST’s Shropshire premises warm and is the focus for a Friday feed up when staff take turns to cook lunch. Agricultural additives have been independently tested by a Lincolnshire-based agricultural machinery dealership.
When a customer has fuel problems, FAST offers a special customer service taking in samples for test and providing an answer. What’s next for FAST?
This month Julia, who produced a fuel quality report last year, will be joined in the laboratory by a new recruit whilst significant investment is being made in the laboratory itself. “The fuel quality report was a real milestone; we went to fuel producers, shook the tree and got factual information rather than the usual fuel hearsay. The perception is that nothing changes in fuel, but believe me it does,” said Julia.
The next generation of heating oil additive with a patent pending is FASTFlame, which provides improved boiler efficiency even on new equipment.
FAST recently expanded into Ireland where Jeff Murrells is in charge. “Whilst this market has huge potential, economic woes have made all fuels price sensitive and premiums, whilst beneficial, can put people off,” said Neil. FAST has also received supply enquiries from Europe.
Attendance at regional shows has led to ‘a massive increase’ in recognition of its own Exocet brand. Getting together with a number of agricultural equipment suppliers and fuel distributors to help educate customers about how to store and look after fuel has paid dividends.
“We’ve come a long way but we’re still a small company with multi-skilled staff willing to turn their hand to anything. I always tell people that if they come to work here they leave their ego at the door,” said Bob.
Lee Burgess (l) and Ian Appleton
With cost cutting top of many a distributor’s business agenda, Fuel Oil News asks are there any opportunities available to increase profit?
Speaking to Euro Oils directors, Lee Burgess and Ian Appleton, the answer is an emphatic “yes”. Just four years ago, the pair acquired this Midlands-based lubricants blender and manufacturer. Having grown the business by 400%, Euro Oils customers are sharing in the company’s success. Our lubricant, your brand
Private label branding in the UK has grown substantially as major oil and lubricant brands have retrenched.
Euro Oils is different from other lubricants manufacturers, in that it produces lubricants solely for its customers. Working with Euro Oils allows your company to build its own brand equity with a quality UK manufactured product bearing your name. Not having its own brand, Euro Oils will never be in competition with yours. Euro Oils acts as your silent partner – never divulging its suppliers nor its customers.
“We launched our own brand of engine oil after becoming disheartened with the service and margins offered by our existing suppliers. As a small wholesaler/distributor we weren’t taken seriously by many of the other companies that we approached. Euro Oils came across as far more on the ball, and I was confident that they could deliver what I wanted.” Professional and profitable
Benchmarking itself against the global leaders in lubricants, recent investment has vastly improved the image, quality and presentation of packaging. “When our customer’s brand packs a punch on the shelf, it’s definitely in everyone’s interests,” said Ian. “Professional packaging that really stands out certainly helps increase sales.”
Considerable investment in the company’s capacity, capability and people has seen new laboratory testing equipment, a state of the art label printer, new filling lines plus more graduate recruitment and staff training. “For the first time in over 7 years of wholesaling other brand engine oils we can finally see profits in small pack engine oil. Previously our oil brands had acted as a door opener and we would be reliant on pushing wiper blades, car mats and seat covers to try and earn some profit. Sales are going very strong; the independent motor factor shops and a couple of larger distributors have been very receptive to our branding and packaging.”
“We’ve added more to our offering,” said Lee. “Having reduced the complexity around the sale of lubricants, there are now less barriers to entry for smaller players. Synthetic oils have risen in prominence and there’s been a move away from barrels to the production of smaller pack sizes and multiple packs. Large or small – all customers can build a brand with a strong image in the automotive and agricultural markets, and make a good profit.”
With threats of negative interest, rather than leave £30,000 in the bank doing nothing, one Euro Oil customer spends the money on lubricants; in six weeks he can make a £10,000 profit.
With the minimum order being just a pallet, entering the own brand lubricants market may be easier than you think. Taking a flexible approach, Euro Oils encourages customers to regard its blending plant as their own. “Simply tell us what you want,” said Lee.“A partnership with Euro Oils was very much part of our company strategy. We felt that developing our own brand products for our retail network would give us a competitive edge. On a more personal level I have known Lee for many years and knew that I could rely on him to deliver a package that would effectively suit our business needs.”
Having upgraded its facilities for the benefit of customers, Euro Oils has upgraded itself with a brand new logo designed to reflect the company’s growing customer base in the Middle East. Check out the new logo and brand new website at www.euro-oils.com.

Glynn Mitchell says it’s the easiest system he has ever used
Crown Oil recently selected Emco Wheaton to be its electronic pump metering supplier after the Bury-based distributor had an excellent introduction to the company’s latest Data Plus 2 equipment
With eight new tankers being added to Crown’s fleet over the coming months, Emco’s electronic pump metering will soon be at the heart of many of its deliveries.
Glynn Mitchell (pictured here), who joined Crown from Samuel Cooke last year, is one of the lucky drivers to have been given one of the brand new DAF CF tankers. “In my time as a tanker driver, this is definitely the easiest system I’ve ever used. Its speed, coupled with ease of use, makes my job very efficient.”
Also impressed with the equipment’s simplicity and quality is Crown Oil fleet engineer, David Goodall, who has been with the company for 10 years. “Implementation has been so easy. The driver of our first new truck took to it straight away without the need for any further training.
“Plus the back-up given by Emco Wheaton’s sales and service team has been excellent. Based on this experience, we decided to fit further trucks with Data Plus 2.”
Asked about what he looks for when sourcing a new tanker, David said: “Price is the main criteria, along with proximity. Located in Lancashire, Crown’s only an hour away from south Yorkshire. We’ve used both RTN and Tasca for 10 years, and both are always asked to quote for each new tanker we source.
“We’ve standardised our fleet so that trucks are identical. They all work in exactly the same way which really helps drivers who use a variety of vehicles.
“We started using Emco products awhile ago and were blown away by a system that’s methodical and essentially both driver and mechanic friendly. It’s a fabulous system that guides drivers through the whole process, especially useful for drivers working from remote depots.
Jonathan Wiltshire, Emco Wheaton’s territory sales manager, added: “We were very pleased to hear that Crown’s drivers have found the simplicity of the Data Plus 2’s litre counter to be such a huge benefit. The equipment is extremely intuitive; it guides each decision the driver has to make, facilitating faster and more efficient deliveries.”The benefits of Data Plus 2
The system comprises a lightweight aluminium pneumatically actuated manifold assembly with gas extractor, an electronic litre counter/control unit, meter, pump, printer and product transfer system.
The new RHA/FTA card from The Fuelcard Company
Exclusive access to discounted fuel is now available to members of the Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association through a new joint fuel card.
The Fuelcard Company card operateson the Keyfuels network, which covers one in five of all UK fuel stations. The new card can be used at over 1600 sites nationwide. Many sites have dedicated HGV fast flow pumps and a third have capacity for HGVs up to 44 tonnes. Members will receive a weekly fixed price based on the bulk fuel market, which could mean savings of over £50,000 per year.*
Users will have access to the Fuelcard Company’s online fuel management systems, allowing them to keep track of fuel spend whilst its smartphone app means that they will always be able find a fuel station. In addition, the online site locator www.ftafuel.co.uk gives the option to download fuel site information straight to a sat nav.
The card is free for the first year and there is no contract to sign or cancellation fee.
FTA chief executive, Theo de Pencier said: “Joining forces with RHA means that we can pool our resources and offer members excellent discounts and price reductions. Having worked together with FairFuelUK in a successful campaign to stop fuel duty hikes, we have gone one step further towards the solution to getting fixed weekly fuel prices for our members.” www.ftafuel.co.uk

MiX Rovi improves effective exchange of information between drivers and the office.
In changing times, Telematics solutions are available to make fleets work more effectively. Fuel Oil News looks at the systems on offer to assist your business.
Updates for a changing industry
This year IMS updated its Tankerbase head office software suite and ePOD on-truck system with new features, including details of on-map tanker movements, location, loads, completed deliveries and on-board stock.
The systems work alongside each other to provide a complete fuel distribution management system. Found in 120 depots across the UK and Ireland, including Staffordshire-based Stoddards (see pages 12/13), the systems enable distributors to optimise delivery resources and monitor valuable stock.
An optional in-cab GPS/GPRS transceiver enables ePOD to transmit delivery coordinates to Tankerbase for use in a web-based vehicle tracking system. Functions such as vehicle location, routing, excess speed alerts, ‘off route’ (geo-fencing) and power take off (PTO) running are all available, as is the ability to control on board equipment.
Drivers can use it to send SMS messages to customers, choosing either a pre-defined template, or to type a customised message.
In response to changing industry requirements and the opportunities provided by new technology, IMS’ specialist fuel distribution systems have evolved continuously over the last 30 years. The company is currently looking at the use of tablets, such as iPads, as business tools and how they can be utilised for order taking and credit control.www.ims-integer.comNew Navman app
Navman Wireless has recently launched a new smartphone and tablet application designed to complement the new product ranges Essential, Fleet+ and Complete.
Steve Blackburn, European vice president of Navman Wireless, said: “With the introduction of OnlineAVL for the smartphone and tablet, we are ensuring that we continue to stay in touch with our customers, in order for them to connect with their fleet in the most effective way possible.
“We are staying ahead of the curve and anticipating the rapidly evolving technological needs of our customers. We continue to be innovative with our software and technology, delivering not only highly efficient and user friendly products but also choice in the way our customers can access information.” www.navmanwireless.co.ukImprove driver safety
Ecotrak, the telematics system solution from CMS Supatrak, can help improve health & safety by alerting the driver to behaviour that could endanger themselves or other road users.Clugston Distribution Services has fitted the product to over 70 of its vehicles.
CMS Supatrak managing director, Jason Airey, said: “The system ensures that if a driver was involved in an accident the manager responsible for them would be able to locate them quickly using live GPS information.
“By using the technology, it becomes very easy to monitor how vehicles are being driven; establishing driver behaviour that is wasting fuel, and by addressing this, savings can be made.” www.supatrak.comCustom MiX of inputs
MiX Telematics launched its latest version of MiX Rovi, a cost-effective and easy-to-use in-cab display, at IAA Hanover 2012.
The device enables optimised communication between drivers and the office, including feedback on effective driving style, a messaging service and accurate routing.
Fleet managers can create their own custom data inputs based on the exact need of their operation.
Charles Tasker, head of fleet telematics for MiX, said: “Fleet managers are often only able to collate information at the end of each day when drivers return to base, which can be a source of great frustration and inefficiency. MiX Rovi now provides the information they need instantly; thereby helping to improve turnaround times and enhance customer service.” www.mixtelematics.comAccurate fuel data
Blue Tree Systems R:COM aims to address the main challenge freight operators face – the lack of trust in the fuel data being collected from the engine control unit.
The figures need to be entirely accurate to assess driver or fuel performance, and inaccuracies can make it difficult for fleet operators to make smart purchasing decisions.
The R:COM technology is the only solution that includes advanced algorithms capable of calibrating the ECM fuel data quickly and easily to provide accurate fuel usage data. The fuel auditor programme compares the amount of fuel burned by each truck in the fleet to the amount purchased. Any differences are immediately highlighted, including drill-down capability to determine the time and location of the discrepancy. www.bluetreesystems.com
Finding one solution to help with several issues across the business makes for a healthy investment for the distributor. FON looks at the new and improved software packages that could make the difference
New module for the WP Group
Fuelsoft implemented a new Lubricants Warehousing module at the WP Group this summer to add to the bulk fuels software already in use. The new module incorporates recommended stock ordering, automated purchase order processing, multiple bin locations, put away lists, picking lists, despatch lists, management of bulk and packaged lubes, and customer and industry specific price lists. This provides the ability to upload cost and selling prices directly from the manufacturer.
David Fairchild, WP Group managing director, said: “We are delighted with the new Lubricants Warehousing module developed by Fuelsoft. It has helped to streamline our warehouse and purchasing processes.”
Fuelsoft has also jointly developed a new Screen Popping module that allows the order entry system to automatically ‘pop’ the screen with the account details of the incoming telephone call.
John Allen, Fuelsoft software director, said: “We decided to upgrade our software with our development partner, Phoenix IT. They already specialise in screen popping software for Sage, so we knew the new product would provide our customer base with a very established and well respected application.”
New integrated solution for Hingley & Callow
Fuelsoft and Touchstar installed and implemented their integrated solution at Hingley & Callow this summer. The Touchstar solution allows scheduled orders to be transmitted directly to the Raven handheld computer in the cab, enabling the driver to print out their schedule of work and invoices eliminating the need to return any paperwork to head office. The in-cab computer returns confirmed quantities and images of the customer’s signature back to the application. The signature can then be included in the body of the invoice which can be emailed to the customer.
David Kingsman, Fuelsoft managing director added: ‘”We are very excited about the high level of integration between the Fuelsoft and Touchstar solutions. This will provide our customers with the ability to control the flow of data to and from vehicles that never return to a manned depot and improve their cash flow by invoicing earlier’. www.fuelsoft.co.uk
A common solution to vehicle tracking
Identifying a single tangible saving within a modern business can be a challenge. Potential savings tend to be spread throughout the operation, but if they can be addressed with a common solution, things can get interesting.
Temperature shrinkage, spillage, vapour loss and leakage can all cause a product loss for fuel distributors. Some also lose fuel in transit due to human interference. It is a prospect that business owners are reluctant to consider, but with soaring fuel costs, should be monitored.
In response, Mechtronic has launched the Stocksmart vehicle tracking and data transfer system. Designed specifically for the fuel oil market, StockSmart makes vehicle, stock and driver monitoring straightforward.
Other tracking systems offer benefits, but can be expensive and involve onerous contracts, while not giving all the required information. Mechtronic has developed an affordable, web based system with no contractual ties, giving easy access to satellite tracking data from any computer.
Real time vehicle tracking can be presented on Google mapping or satellite picture. Small ticket icons on the trail denote historical delivery information, and a geo-fencing feature shows entry and exit times for any designated location. A summary ticket report enables quick assessment of vehicle efficiency and allows users to spot unusual behaviour. Routers benefit from vehicle contents tracking and remote end of shift reporting, allowing efficient allocation of remaining stock.
A complete breakdown of miles travelled, driving time, stationary time and total working time gives StockSmart users a constant picture of vehicle activity. www.mechtronic.ltd.uk
A unique UAP
In April, Toptech released a new unified automation platform (UAP) unique in today’s market. Leveraging two industry leading platforms, MultiLoad II and Toptech Data Services (TDS), provide a hosted automation platform designed to offer unprecedented flexibility, ease of use, and simplicity.
The MultiLoad II acts as the control platform to manage all of the facilities loading process. Each MultiLoad connects over the internet to TDS, which serves as the user interface to visualise consolidated load data, manage business data, run reports, and perform inventory management and balancing.
MultiLoad will receive all database updates from TDS at regular intervals, so if the internet connection is severed, it will continue to function independently.
Steve Wert, director of software technologies, said: “Toptech’s UAP combines cutting edge technology with the power and reliability of our existing products. The result is a solution that allows our customers to take advantage of the flexibility and scalability of cloud computing in concert with the process control features of MultiLoad.”
Kathy West, PFT Alexander, said: “This is exactly what the next generation of this robust system needs to fit the new alternative fuels markets. With the choices offered to size the solution to the immediate customer needs and the option for additional growth later, UAP is ideal for this market.”

Dantec has announced the completion of a £30,000 investment to increase capacity on its production line.
The new line will increase manufacturing capacity by 30% in both 75mm and 100mm bore hoses, significantly reducing lead times. The project is being built using the in-house expertise of Dantec’s maintenance engineer Eugene Smit and is being overseen by works manager Ian McGillivray.
The company’s composite hoses are used to transfer petrol, oil products, chemicals and liquefied gases. This year, turnover at the Wirral-based firm rose to £5.6m and sales to the Middle East doubled.
The mayor of Wirral, councillor Gerry Ellis and mayoress Margaret Ellis opened the new facilities at the firm’s works on Tarran Way, Moreton.
Jon Loach said: “Dantec knows that growth in the competitive global market can be driven by investment at home. As we target potentially lucrative export markets like the USA, Middle East andAsia we are promoting job creation through investment on a local level. We are keen to increase our sales and turnover by working with export partners to improve performance and are optimistic that we will grow again this year.”
The company is launching a fresh transatlantic campaign after signing a major deal with Texas agency True North Works to promote Dantec in the USA.
Managing director, John Laidlaw, said: “This partnership will play a crucial role in our fresh strategy aimed at driving growth, profile and reputation across the USA. There are more than 800 fuel storage terminals in America compared to around 650 in the whole of the EU. Despite being a mature market it is dominated by weaker products. This presents a terrific opportunity for Dantec.”
Over the past 12 months the company has seen its attitude to expansion bear fruit, by announcing a trebling of sales in the marine sector.

Keyfuels has achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating for its customer service, ranking in the top 10% of all businesses for delivering a first class service offering.
The fuel card and fuel management solutions company joined several other leading service providers and blue chip organisations in achieving the very best customer service ratings. The ratings were carried out independently by the Customer Service Network (CSN), which calculates a company’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) and is recognised as the worldwide standard for measuring, understanding and improving customer experience.
Pete McCarthy, service and operations director at Keyfuels, commented: “Being recognised in the top 10% of businesses is an outstanding achievement for Keyfuels, particularly as we were up against specificUKservice companies.
“The ‘Excellent’ rating is a testament to our commitment to delivering exceptional service levels to our customers and one which our staff should be very proud of. Ultimately, Keyfuels is a people business. We work hard to develop a partnership approach with our customers to ensure they are getting the best service from us.”
He added: “Keyfuels NPS has increased by nearly 15% in the last 12 months, which has taken us from a ‘Good’ to ‘Excellent’ benchmark. This has been achieved by investing heavily in staff development and training, which included using an external training provider to deliver courses on customer service excellence for all operational employees.”

MiX Telematics marketing and operations director, Steve Coffin
MiX Telematics has launched a new generation of its dashboard-mounted RIBAS display.
The new unit’s functionality has been extended to include Green/Amber/Red status lights. These lights reflect the current driving-style, telling the driver when he or she is driving correctly, when a pre-programmed operational parameter is in danger of being exceeded and when a parameter has been exceeded.
The green status light, which takes the form of a MiX Telematics logo at the foot of the display unit, indicates that a vehicle is being driven correctly. In such circumstances, this is the only light illuminated on the display.
The amber and red status lights are incorporated into the icons appearing alongside the RIBAS letters, each of which stands for a pre-programmed operational parameter where:R = over RevvingI = excessive IdlingB = harsh BrakingA = harsh AccelerationS = over Speeding
Whenever a parameter comes close to being exceeded, the amber light illuminates, alerting the driver to a potential problem and thereby allowing corrective action to be taken. The amber light is intended purely as a warning sign; no record of an infringement is made against the driver by Fleet Manager at this time. However, should the amber warning be ignored and the parameter exceeded, the infringement is recorded by Fleet Manager and the red light illuminates.
“Since its introduction four years ago, RIBAS has helped revolutionised the fuel returns and safety records of fleets nationwide,” says MiX Telematics marketing & operations director Steve Coffin. “Key to this has been the system’s impact upon drivers’ awareness of how well or otherwise they are performing behind the wheel. Operators have confirmed to us time and again that RIBAS has proved itself in service as a simple yet effective means of securing a safe and efficient driving style.”
A new range of anti-theft alarms has just been unveiled at the Oil & Renewable Energy Show by Dunraven Systems.
The range from the suppliers of Apollo ultrasonic oil level monitors, offers oil users a choice of four different anti-theft technologies.
A transmitter has been optimised to monitor variances in the level of fuel inside each tank. It screws on easily, with no specialist equipment required. A long life lithium battery is supplied as standard, with an operational life of up to 10 years.
In the event of a theft being detected, the transmitter unit sends an encrypted signal to a remote receiver unit.
Managing director, Gerry Jones said: “The issue of fuel theft has probably never been higher on the agenda of homeowners, householders, fuel distributors and heating oil technicians alike. Recognising that no two fuel storage installations are the same, we’ve launched no fewer than four ways of combating fuel theft, providing the marketplace with a choice of technologies and systems instead of a compromise.”
The company also announced broadband and GPRS versions of its RMS remote tank monitoring system.
The new broadband plugs into existing consumer broadband hubs, while the GPRS option relays data to a modem in the customer’s premises and in turn to the fuel distributor.

Stoddards has taken delivery of a brand new baby tanker from Road Tankers Northern.
The tanker is fully equipped with Alpeco bottom loading and vapour recovery equipment and the MF400 electronic meter system with metered uplift facility.
Judith Stoddard explained: “With so many of our drops being to rural villages, homes and farms we needed a small truck to cope with difficult access such as narrow gates and entrances. This was the prime motivating factor in going for a small truck just to carry on servicing those customers.
“My father used to buy trucks from RTN and we have continued to buy from them as they are knowledgeable about our business and offer an excellent product. The drivers like the Alpeco meters and are familiar with them and particularly like the remote control feature. I would think it fair to say that all the trucks we have in the future will be fitted with this facility.”
Clive Felton, RTN’s sales manager added. “We’ve dealt with Stoddards since the 1990s and have been their preferred supplier of fuel delivery vehicles ever since. The latest vehicle is 3-compartment, 8600 litre, aluminium, fully ADR and petroleum regulations compliant. The vehicle has been built on a DAF LF45 210 chassis.”http://www.stoddards.co.uk/

The company’s new flash evaporation plant is helping it to exceed stringent PFO legislation
M2environmental has recently re-branded, reverting back to its original name of Malary.
Alongside its core business of manufacturing M2 processed fuel oil, Malary also produces cost effective solutions for hazardous waste streams which historically have been sent to land fill or incineration.
To accommodate an anticipated increase in chemists, business and equipment, a new laboratory is currently being built, which will more than double the existing work area. The laboratory was initially installed to provide seven day support to the company’s processed fuel oil production, but in the last six months it has branched out to provide external services. This includes the analysis of processed fuel oil, waste water, used oils, contaminated soils and hazardous waste.
Following a £300,000 investment the company commissioned a new PFO evaporation plant earlier this year. By introducing an additional process, Malary can reduce water content in PFO to as little as 0.1%, whilst also improving fuel quality and increasing production capacity. The investment also included the building of a new control room and the commencement of an automation project.
Operations director, Peter Oxley, commented: “We’re really pleased with the results which show that the time spent on R&D during 2011 has really paid off. This is a major step for the company, increasing production capacity by more than 25%, and moving us one step closer towards full automation.”
Recently installed – Caldo’s new Alpeco skid
Alpeco has recently installed a new bottom loading skid at Caldo Oils’ St Helen’s depot.
The company’s main depot was originally fitted with a top loading facility, which although was regularly serviced and maintained, was deemed too old. Managing director, Mike Scott was keen to replace the unit with an analogue installation: “I specifically elected to use an analogue system as I’m a traditionalist. I very much liked the cogs and wheels of our previous system, which lasted more than 30 years, so we’ve no reason to expect any less from the new installation.”
Alpeco was awarded the contract to supply and install a brand new bottom-loading skid, equipped with four loading arms and mechanical meters configured for 900 lpm loading rates. Alpeco also provided a finance package through its business finance partner, CBF.
“Although we have a number of depots, we provide all our fuel supplies from the St Helens facility as this is our only wet depot. Alpeco came up with a very good deal through CBF and we believe that it’s much easier to use one source to design, manufacture, install and even finance the whole project,” Mike explained.
“Alpeco also offers a very good back up service. This means a lot, as I can pick up the phone certain in the knowledge that they won’t present us with an invoice for something that should have been provided in the first place. Also you can actually speak to someone, which is always a great help.”
The convenient but safe and secure lock box
Hytek is now offering out-of-hours collections. Simply let the company know that you’d like to pick up your order after hours and it will be stored in an outdoor lock box. The steel box is equipped with a high security combination padlock. The combination will be sent by the Hytek team, once it has received confirmation that the order will be picked up.
The company’s new 2012/2013 catalogue is to be its biggest yet.
The catalogue, which has an extra 14 pages and over 100 new products, boasts more than 12 different product sections. Grouping similar products together in these sections means that the new catalogue is an easy to navigate tool.
Many products have remained the same price as last year and in some cases prices have fallen.www.hytekgb.com

Fuel wholesaler Palmer & Harvey has reported an average fuel economy saving of 4.7 percent during a field trial using Mobil Delvac flagship synthetic engine and drivetrain lubricants, and Mobilube gear oils.
The introduction of fully-synthetic, high performance lubricants has helped to improve the fuel economy of Mercedes-Benz, Iveco and DAF trucks.
The field trial was initiated as part of Palmer & Harvey’s ongoing commitment to improve its sustainability performance. Four trucks were selected to participate in the trials from the company’s Dunfermline distribution centre.
Fully-synthetic lubricants replaced conventional mineral based products in the engine, transmission and rear axle of two Mercedes-Benz 1823 Atego trucks, one Iveco 180E23 and a DAF CF 85. Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 was used in the Mercedes-Benz and Iveco trucks, and Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 in the DAF engine. Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90 was used in the transmission and rear axle of all four vehicles.
Tthe fuel economy performance of the vehicles was monitored over a five month period. Significant fuel economy benefits were achieved across all four vehicles, with the DAF demonstrating a 4.9 percent reduction in fuel consumption.
“The results reported by Palmer & Harvey demonstrate the significant benefits that could potentially be gained by using fully-synthetic, fuel-efficient lubricants in a vehicle’s engine and full drivetrain,” said Steve Crawley, UK& Irelandcommercial vehicle lubricants manager, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Petroleum Specialties.
