Essar maintains RoSPA gold with exemplary safety performance

Essar has achieved the highest accolade for the fourth year in a row at this year’s RoSPA Health and Safety Awards. The Cheshire-based firm was awarded ‘Gold’ status for its health and safety performance at its Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port.

The annual awards, organised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, are the longest-running industry awards scheme of any type in the UK and assesses companies on their health and safety standards, benchmarked against year-on-year performance and best-in-class criteria globally. The awards are held every year and recognise hundreds of companies across the UK operating in high hazard industries.

EOUK is committed to delivering the highest level in health and safety excellence, by building a culture of safety across its operations and continually enhancing its behaviours and processes. The company’s Stanlow refinery is one of the UK’s largest, supplying 16% of all road transport fuels and aviation fuel to several major airports including Manchester and Liverpool and employs over 700 staff with an additional 800 on-site contractors.

A collective achievement

Jon Barden, chief operating officer at Essar Oil UK, said: “Our business requires us to appropriately manage the risks and meet the expectations of all stakeholders. To deliver this, all of us need to have continuous commitment to keeping ourselves and our colleagues safe. We are pleased to maintain this standard for another year running at Stanlow. This is a collective achievement for the Stanlow team, and I thank every individual for their contributions to this outcome. As a business, we operate in an inherently high-risk environment, and that’s why health and safety is a continuous focus for everyone at Essar.”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s achievements director, said: “This is a fantastic and well-deserved accomplishment. All our award entrants demonstrate their unwavering commitment and passion for keeping people safe at work. By receiving this recognition, Essar Oil UK join like-minded businesses and organisations worldwide, who represent the very best in their approach to Health and Safety. I would like to add my personal thanks for all the work that it has taken to secure this well-deserved award – congratulations to all those involved, who champion and drive-up Health and Safety standards every day. You are a fantastic example to others in your sector.”

An important catalyst

Established in 1956, the competition provides an important opportunity for organisations to continually enhance their health and safety standards by evaluating their performance, benchmarked year-on- year and against best-in-class criteria globally. As a key forum for technical knowledge sharing and collaboration, the Awards are an important catalyst in the global advancement of health and safety systems.
