Certas Energy continues its drive for network resilience with Scottish truck stop acquisition

Certas Energy has acquired the Ecclefechan truck stop in Scotland, strengthening its network as part of a wider drive to improve resilience across the UK’s freight infrastructure.

The site, powered by a 100kW wind turbine, supports Certas Energy’s sustainability ambitions while also addressing growing calls for improved facilities for HGV drivers – seen as critical to recruitment, retention and network resilience.

Located on the A74(M), a key route between Scotland and England, the site plays an important role in supporting high-volume HGV traffic along a critical logistics corridor. With major improvements planned, the company is looking to replicate the award-winning success of its first site – the UK’s oldest Truckstop, The Hollies, The Stop.

Shaping the future

Mike Heaton, Head of Estate Development at Certas Energy says: “By acquiring a key Scottish truck stop site into the Certas Energy network, we’re not just expanding our footprint – we’re helping to shape the next generation of safe, secure and sustainable truck stops and roadside services.

“Powered by wind, with e HGV charging and other major improvements planned, this site embodies the innovation and investment needed to support the UK’s transition to a lower carbon freight future.”

Certas Energy has been present at the Ecclefechan site since opening an HGV refuelling bunker there in 2019.

This significant investment, that sees all 20 employees retained, makes the ‘Fechan Truckstop the second to be added to Certas Energy’s network this year and its third in total.

As driver recruitment and retention continue to challenge the sector, investment in secure, well-equipped truck stop infrastructure is increasingly seen as a critical component of a resilient national fuel distribution network.
