Fire at Fawley refinery swiftly brought under control

A fire that broke out within a unit at Fawley refinery, near Hampshire, around midday today, June 6, was quickly brought under control with a spokesperson describing it as ‘an isolated fire’ that was ‘quickly and safely contained.

In a statement shared on twitter ExxonMobil said: “We have experienced an isolated fire on one of our units that on-site emergency teams, with assistance from Hampshire Fire & Rescue crews moved quickly (to respond to), safely containing the incident.”

An afternoon update confirmed the incident was under control but also warned of the potential use of flares: “Further to our earlier communication we can confirm that the fire has been safely contained. We may continue to use our flare in order to safely manage ongoing operations.”

Controlled use of flares

In a statement, Annita McCurdy, process manager for the refinery, confirmed no injuries had resulted from the incident: “We have experienced an isolated fire on one of our units that on-site emergency teams, with assistance from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, moved quickly and have safely contained the incident. There have been no injuries and all personnel are accounted for.”

But, with the continuing use of flaring on site following the original incident, usually employed to safely burn excess gases with lower environmental impact, Ms McCurdy also moved to allay any concerns from the local community.

“As a result (of the incident) we are currently having to use our flares. Please be assured that the use of our flares is completely safe and controlled. We apologise if the use of our flares causes any concern or disruption to our host community. We will update you further as soon as we have more information.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
