Located at the Humber Refinery LPG Terminal, the site comprises two underground caverns mined approximately 200 metres below ground in chalk. Each cavern provides around 110,000m³ of storage capacity, storing propane and butane to help meet customer demand across the UK.
Developed between 1980 and 1986, the caverns represented a significant investment at the time. More than four decades on, the facility remains an important strategic supply point, particularly in supporting seasonal demand and winter resilience.

“Together with Calor, we have maintained and invested in this facility for four decades. As we mark this milestone, we recognise the vision and execution of the teams who developed and delivered the project 40 years ago. The engineering was pioneering at the time and, today, the caverns remain the only mined hydrocarbon storage caverns ever constructed in Britain.
“The milestone reflects both the resilience of the infrastructure and the expertise of the people who operate and manage the site every day.”
