The collaboration marks a major step forward, as Avioxx moves toward full-scale deployment of its integrated Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) systems – beginning with a 5,000 tonne-per-year demonstration facility and a 32,000 tonne-per-year commercial plant blueprint.
Founded in Denmark and operating across more than 20 countries, NIRAS is recognised globally for its capabilities within decarbonisation and its approach to sustainability, as well as its technical expertise in renewable energy, waste management, and complex industrial infrastructure. The company has delivered major low-carbon projects for clients in energy transition, water, and advanced manufacturing.
Chris Hancock, Director at Avioxx, said: Partnering with NIRAS is a milestone for Avioxx. Their international experience, engineering excellence, and strong sustainability culture align perfectly with our vision to make energy-independent, waste-based SAF a commercial reality.
A bold step in SAF production
“This partnership gives our investors and partners the confidence that our projects will meet the highest technical and environmental standards.”
NIRAS will provide design, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) development input – validating Avioxx’s technology integration and preparing the basis of design for future plant delivery.
Jim Buston, Market Director at NIRAS, said: “We’re excited to work with Avioxx on such an innovative and forward-looking project. The combination of waste conversion, solid oxide fuel cell power, and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis represents a bold new step in sustainable fuel production. Our shared focus on practical, scalable solutions makes this partnership a natural fit.”
Avioxx is working with world-class partners to build a state-of-the-art sustainable aviation fuel refinery and deliver its commitment to accelerate the UK’s transition to net-zero aviation fuel. Projected figures suggest an initial output of 5,000 tonnes of sustainable fuel per year from 38,000 tonnes of waste, increasing to 32,000 tonnes of SAF per year. The company’s rapid scale-up model aims to deliver 10 plants by 2030, producing 312,500 tonnes per year.
The initial 5,000 tonne per year plant will enable Avioxx to de-risk the significant capital investment needed to produce at scale. The plant is planned to be operational in 2026.
