Certas Energy opens HGV refuelling bunker at the Port of Southampton

Developed in partnership with port operator Associated British Ports (ABP), the new refuelling bunker site is the first of its kind to be opened inside the port. It features an offset tank layout with a combined capacity of 250,000 litres and eight high-speed refuelling pumps, which dispense fuel at speeds up to 120 litres per minute.

The site has been designed to fuel the high volume of HGVs that pass through the logistical hub of the Port of Southampton, providing quick, efficient and conveniently-located refuelling for truck drivers picking up or dropping off loads.

Certas Energy’s Port of Southampton refuelling site supplies DERV, red diesel, AdBlue and cleaner-burning alternative Shell GTL Fuel, which is exclusively distributed in the UK by Certas Energy.
Shell GTL Fuel is a cleaner, drop-in alternative to diesel and can be used immediately in HGVs to reduce emissions of harmful local air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) – without requiring modifications to engines or equipment. The fuel can also be blended with regular road diesel.
Port users purchasing Shell GTL Fuel will also be able to opt in to the Shell GTL Fuel with Carbon Offsets scheme from Certas Energy. The scheme enables businesses to offset unavoidable carbon emissions from their operations while simultaneously improving local air quality through the use of Shell GTL Fuel.
Clive Thomas, ABP Port of Southampton’s head of commercial and property, commented:
“This state-of-the-art refuelling facility will support smoother operations for hauliers operating through the Port of Southampton as they continue their essential work to keep Britain trading.
“We’re also proud to be able to offer Shell GTL Fuel at the port, which further demonstrates our commitment to reducing air quality and creating a cleaner, greener port environment.”
Andrew Goodwin, national bunker manager at Certas Energy, added:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vital role of our ports keeping the nation moving. We’re delighted to open our latest HGV-dedicated bunker site at the Port of Southampton and help fuel the logistics sector on the road to a post-COVID recovery.
“With multi-product dispensing capability, wider lanes and high-speed pumps, our new facility makes refuelling quicker and easier – meaning that truck drivers no longer need to take a refuelling detour before continuing on with their journey.”
The Port of Southampton development is the latest in Certas Energy’s network of 26 HGV refuelling sites across the UK’s road network, joining strategic locations such as the Port of Liverpool, Holyhead and Northampton’s ‘Golden Triangle’ of logistics.
